Adam Smith CEO of Surplus to Purpose

Adam Smith has been a professional chef for over ten years and has held a wealth of head chef positions internationally. Whilst in Australia he witnessed the scale of food waste internationally and within the catering industry.

He has been voted one of the most influential men in the world by AskMen (2014), the Telegraph voted him as one of the 50th most influential people in UK Food and Drink. (Food and Drink Power List 2017).

In 2022, Adam was appointed CEO of Surplus to Purpose to lead Surplus to Purpose to the goal of becoming the largest events caterer using intercepted produce.

Vision:

To help combat the UK’s £20bn food waste crisis Mission: Surplus To Purpose (SToP) is an environmental enterprise which specialises in the interception of surplus food destined for waste. This produce may be past Best Before, suffered accidental damage or surplus to requirements. Trained personnel record, process and quality control all intercepted food, to ensure it is safe for consumption. This food is then redistributed through various activities such as; boxes for families, outside catering & events, Pay As You Feel cafés and into schools.

The ultimate aim is to eradicate food waste through exposure and education, creating high end, quality meals, and ultimately products which are readily available to all. We want to change people’s behaviour towards food, and consider their impact whilst being the catalyst for systematic changes within the food sector. I try to link Feeding communities and StoP whenever I can when doing any charity feeding to prevent any surplus foods going into wasteland . I get my food from TRJFP in Leeds & The London Community kitchen based in Harrow. We keep in regular contact with both locations so we can use any surplus food wherever possible

Surplus to Purpose (SToP) has opened a PAYF (Pay as you feel) community Café in the heart of Scarborough. With the same mission to feed bellies not bins, the café utilises the surplus food intercepted by SToP to create some of the beautiful food on offer. As ever, like the food boxes available to purchase from their Leeds warehouse, the food served in the café has no set menu, relying on the interceptions of surplus food they have received that week.

The Café is entirely plant based and encourages their community and customers to embrace their spontaneous side and sample their dish of the day. Or if that’s not their thing, just have a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the space.

Chef Adam Smith has run several successful PAYF Cafes and in partnership with The Street CaVCA, is looking forward to creating a warm inviting and friendly space which serves the planet by serving the community.

The Surplus to Purpose Café is open Monday - Friday
